Biology/Ecology Faculty

Thomas College is seeking an individual to design and offer undergraduate courses in ecology to support the new major in biology, expand general education opportunities in the sciences, complement and support a range of current majors including environmental science, education, and conservation law enforcement and position the College for developing new options in the future, perhaps to include forensic science.

The candidate will be expected to offer a range of undergraduate courses to include Ecology and Organismal Biology. The candidate will work collaboratively with other faculty in the sciences at Thomas and across other disciplines to create and deliver courses in ecology that will complement current course offerings in biology and environmental science, help support Middle and Secondary Education certification tracks in life science and contribute to new program offerings at the undergraduate level.

Candidates must be committed to teaching excellence, service to the College, community engagement, and professional development. Responsibilities for full time faculty include the equivalent of a 4/4 teaching load, academic advising, committee service, and course/program development.

Water / Wastewater Engineering Associate

As a Water / Wastewater Engineering Associate, you will apply general civil and environmental engineering design principles on a variety of public and private water / wastewater projects. Projects will include treatment facility planning and design, raw water intakes, water distribution lines, booster pump station design, regional water planning, water system mapping and management plans, lift station design, sanitary sewer system planning and design, asset management planning, and a variety of permitting. Typical project responsibilities will include basic engineering computations, design, layout, modeling, CAD, and engineering report writing. You will also assist in the preparation of design drawings, plans, specifications, supporting documents, permit applications, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, quantity estimates, and construction cost estimates. You may attend client meetings and visit construction sites to assist in monitoring progress.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field and two years of relevant experience.
Relevant water / wastewater experience, internship, co-op, or research experience preferred.
Engineering Intern (EI) certification preferred.
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS a plus.
Valid driver’s license.

Staff Researcher – Acoustics, Dolphin Research Program

The Staff Researcher – Acoustics on our Sarasota Dolphin Research Program team contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago (“BZC”) by assisting with field and laboratory research of the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), primarily with operations and analysis of acoustic research equipment and data, in support of BZC’s mission and continued excellence in conservation programming.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Assist with operations of the Sarasota Bay Listening Network (SBLN), including passive acoustic listening station (PALS) installation and maintenance, acoustic data processing and archiving, updating data and equipment inventories, and implementing QA/QC protocols.

* Participate in collaborative research on acoustics, behavior, and communication, including the Sarasota Dolphin Whistle Database, Digital Acoustic Recording Tag (DTAG)/biologging projects, and the Sarasota Coast Acoustic Network (SBLN’s sister network for tracking acoustically tagged animals) as requested.
Assist with field and laboratory research activities of the SDRP, including: a) photographic identification surveys and analyses (with a goal of eventually leading surveys); b) behavioral observations, c) tagging and tracking (dolphins and fish), d) biopsy dart sampling, e) dolphin catch-and-release health assessments, f) rescues and follow-up monitoring, and g) purse-seining for fish surveys as requested.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Marine Science or a related field, or eight years’ equivalent combination of training and/or experience required.

Master’s degree or one year of experience in marine mammal field research, including prior experience with marine bioacoustics monitoring equipment and analyses.
Experience with signal processing and programming in MATLAB, Python, and/or R.
Computer skills required, with experience in Microsoft Office and RavenPro.

Entry-Level Geologist/Scientist

Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering

Union College invites applications for the position of full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering, beginning September 1, 2025. We are looking to expand and diversify our areas of focus into, but not limited to research in the areas of: Air Quality, Waste Management, Soils and Remediation Technologies, and/or Energy and Environmental Sustainability. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering welcomes applicants with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and mentoring undergraduates in the field of Environmental Engineering. The CEE Department currently has expertise in the areas of water quality, risk assessment, and hydrology. We are looking to expand and diversify our areas of focus into, but not limited to research in the areas of: Air Quality, Waste Management, Soils and Remediation Technologies, and/or Energy and Environmental Sustainability. Experience working directly with communities is a plus. The new hire will teach courses in the curriculum as appropriate, including core classes and upper-level courses appropriate for their area of expertise such as Introduction to Environmental Engineering and/or Contaminant Fate and Transport, as well as upper environmental engineering electives. In addition, there is an expectation that all new hires in the Department will teach at least one course annually to non-engineers ideally as part of the College’s new Complex Questions/Global Challenges and Social Justice common curriculum. The new hire will also be heavily involved in the ABET accreditation process which includes opportunities for curriculum development and assessment.

Water Quality Compliance Program Manager

The Oregon Department of Agriculture is looking to hire a Water Quality Compliance Program Manager (Compliance and Regulatory Manager 1).

What you’ll be doing:

The Water Quality Compliance Program Manager’s primary purpose is to serve as the program leader and manager for the Confined Animal Feeding Operation & Fertilizer programs to ensure a high degree of professionalism and service that meet the mission of the individual programs and to ensure that the mission, core values and strategic plan for the agency are achieved. This position has particular emphasis on overseeing the program’s compliance inspections and enforcement work for the protection or water quality and the states natural resources.

This position is responsible for:

Coordinating and assigning the daily activities of the CAFO and Fertilizer programs and will provide guidance to ensure that overall program area goals and objectives are being met and will monitor and track activities and results.

Ensure compliance with existing regulations and development and implementation of procedures and guidelines for efficient and effective service delivery, working closely with the agriculture industry, the environmental community, and with members of the CAFO Advisory Committee and its technical advisors.

Assists in the preparation of the department budgets by preparing program and project specific budgets and administers budgetary controls.

Our Water Quality Compliance Program Manager is a permanent full-time position, located in Salem, Oregon and is a Management Service – Supervisory position and is not represented by a union. Candidates may have the option to work a hybrid schedule based on agency needs.

Assistant Research Scientist – Environmental Remote Sensing SAR Specialist

This Assistant Research Scientist – Environmental Remote Sensing SAR Specialist position provides support for MTRI programs focused land cover classification around the Great Lakes region and the Congo. Experience with GIS analysis and processing SAR and Lidar data for environmental science research is required, as is significant experience with geospatial Python programming. Applicants must also have experience with applying photogrammetry to UAV collected imagery. The applicant will be expected to apply their knowledge of sensing and image processing to assist in the development of research questions and/or research programs. The applicant will be expected to participate in challenging field work that collects ground truth data for informing algorithms based on remote sensing data. This in an in-person position based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI (https://mtu.edu/mtri).

Responsibilities:

1. Acquire and process polarimetric SAR data for studying peatland ecosystems. Explain relationships between SAR observations and on-the-ground phenomenology, including vegetation characteristics and inundation.
2. Apply machine learning classification algorithms to high resolution imagery for locating invasive species.
3. Apply photogrammetry to UAV collected imagery to construct 3D models of natural environments.
4. Participate in research projects applying remote sensing, geospatial analysis, earth science knowledge, and analysis skills to solve project tasks for ongoing and new MTRI research projects, with the expectation of planning and coordinating research and development tasks in collaboration with other principal investigators.
5. Be able to deal with issues encountered in data processing and analysis to ensure scientifically valid data collection. Evaluate, select, and apply the results of data collected and research projects undertaken. Describe and share any concerns about the results or methodology and recommend or implement countermeasures.
6. Participate in fieldwork in challenging environments, including navigation in remote areas and following data collection protocols.
7. Contribute to competitive proposals including development of specific tasks that use and exploit remote sensing data and products.

Environmental Specialist II – Wastewater

Under general supervision, responsible for technical work of monitoring, evaluating, enforcing and overseeing all aspects of the city-wide wastewater pollution control program. Monitors, evaluates and enforces community compliance with Federal, State, County and City environmental control regulations and ordinances. Communicates and coordinates with local commercial and industrial businesses on Federal, State, County, and City environmental regulations. Performs related administrative work as required. Reports to the Wastewater Collections Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Manages and enforces the City’s Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) Program and is responsible for scheduling inspections and reporting. Serves as the primary liaison between commercial food service establishments and the department and provides educational information to customers concerning FOG.

Assist the public and internal City staff with interpretation of environmental regulations and compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws, codes and ordinances.

Communicates regularly with state and local environmental regulators including preparing reports and correspondence related to the required monitoring, and permit deviations that occur throughout the collection system.

Performs field investigations, sampling and monitoring. Interpret and report the results of laboratory data.

Cooperates with Code Compliance to prepare and issue notices of violations. Investigates reports of hazardous discharges, illegal dumping or other violations of sewer use ordinances and regulations.

Reviews State and Federal pretreatment regulations and initiates actions to keep the City current with regard to compliance. Conduct field investigations of facilities and stormwater drainage to evaluate compliance with environmental codes and ordinances, recommend modifications to ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain case files for documentation.

Reviews, revises and writes local environmental regulations and operating instructions for the City Code of Ordinances.

Develops and implements wastewater public education programs for the public, schools, community groups, and businesses. Educational programs may include partnerships with local and state universities for research purposes.

Performs all duties in compliance with established policies, procedures, schedules, and standards of safety and quality.

Prepares and assists with emergency response for events like hurricanes, as directed.

Senior Sustainability Engineer
