Job Summary

A research scientist position in physical oceanography is available at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. The research scientist will work collaboratively on a number of projects focused on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Specifically, the research scientist will work closely with Dr. Susan Lozier, the international lead for the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP; (www.o-snap.org) on research projects related to AMOC variability. Additionally, the research scientist will work closely with postdoctoral researchers in Dr. Lozier’s lab and coordinate communication among the OSNAP international and national partners.
Responsibilities

The individual will be expected to:

Conduct high-quality research in physical oceanography
Produce all OSNAP metrics and data products
Publish papers
Present work at national and international conferences

The researcher will also work collaboratively with oceanographers at Georgia Tech and elsewhere on projects related to OSNAP. Opportunities for cruise participation as part OSNAP will be available.
Required Qualifications

Lake Science

Manage a sampling and testing program, including taking samples, sending samples to labs, charting results, and communicating results.
Understand lake chemistry and science and interpret test results compared to state standards
Work with consulting engineers to provide options for solutions.
Measure and track key performance indicators related to chemistry.
Conduct vegetation surveys as needed
Conduct fish, stocking surveys and oversee fish, stocking as recommended by consulting engineers
Work to resolve wildlife issues, including mitigating damage and preventing further issues, especially concerning geese, muskrats, and foxes.
Advance member education regarding the issues of the day to include: fertilizers with no phosphorus, leaves blown into the lake, vegetative, buffers, dog waste, aquatic, plantings, and rain barrels.

Dredge Operations

Plan and schedule dredge operations in the Main Lake and Keatons Lake.
Hire and retain personnel for dredge operations
Work with the mechanic foreman to ensure that all equipment is in good working order and repaired and replaced on a regular basis.
Establish key performance indicator targets for sediment removal
Work with the Maintenance & Ecology Director to maintain the 9.9 area spoils bays.
Communicate to Lakefront owners by email, phone calls, and in person.
Manage contracts for dredge operations

Marinas and Docks

Manage marina staff, including hiring and training.
Manage gas and merchandise, including purchase, inventory control, and sales in coordination with the Finance department
Maintain spill kits and life ring/fire extinguisher stations in coordination with Buildings and Grounds.
Maintain an updates to spill prevention protocols.
Work with the director of maintenance and ecology to maintain the infrastructure of the main marina, Small, marina, clubhouse, dock, and other lake structures. This is to include Replacement project, oversight, and scheduling, repairs to posts, planks, bumpers, lighting, and signs.
Assist the finance department with the annual leases of marina slips, and dry sail parking spaces.

Stormwater/Erosion & Sediment Control

Work with the erosion and sediment control inspector to manage capital projects related to maintenance. These items include: roadside, ditches and culverts, ponds, dredging, and fountains, golf course, cross, culverts, planning and coordination with departments and committees, Keatons Lake aeration system.
Oversee and manage environmental areas, including: Clubhouse Poole and Fitness, 13th Fairway Pond, 10th Fairway Pond, 14th Fairway Pond.
Manage erosion and sediment control program to include inspections and personnel. Ensure that personnel have proper certification as erosion and sediment control inspectors.

Lake Use

Manage the Bowie and float program. This is to include regulatory and non-regulatory buoys. Establish an annual program to purchase, set, move and repair buoys as needed.
Enforce Regulation X in coordination with the general manager. This is to include watercraft and floats.
Coordinate lake events and activities with association, staff and event sponsoring organizations. This is to include ski club practices, shows, and ski jump use; adaptive, waterski events; sailing club, regattas, and junior sailing lessons; and fishing club tournaments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

– Provides expertise and makes decisions on management of the lakes (vegetation, fish, and wildlife management, etc.) for multipurpose use and ecological balance based on a thorough understanding of ecological and biological principles and the guidelines set forth in the BOD approved water resources management plan.

– Samples and tests for water quality (E.Coli, cyanobacteria, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, total kjeldahl nitrogen, alkalinity, pH, total phosphorous, heavy metals, PCBs, turbidity, sediments, temperature, etc.).

– Biological surveying of lakes and tributaries (fish, macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, submerged aquatic vegetation, and phytoplankton). Involves snorkeling and open water SCUBA diving.

-Fisheries & Habitat Management- Fish stock assessments. Stocks game fish, forage fish, and grass carp as necessary.

– Physical monitoring of structural integrity of each lake (shoreline, bulkhead, and beach inspections, etc.).

– Data analysis, mapping with GIS, and development of reports.

– Monitors lake water levels and discharge (piezometer and weir readings, etc.).

– Operates and maintains both dams in accordance with VA Dam Safety Regulations.

– Responds to resident’s complaints and/or concerns related to the lake.

– Works with the Erosion and Sediment Inspector regarding issues pertaining to storm water management.

– Oversees and schedules dredging activities.

– Educates residents on issues involving the ecology, biology, and conservation of the lakes.

– Coordinates and oversees volunteers for water resources bio-monitoring.

– Writes monthly and annual activity reports.

– Develops and adheres to the lakes cost center annual budget.

– Develops and adheres to the lakes cost center five year plan.

– Maintains and adheres to the Lakes Management Implementation Plan.

– Obtains permits.

– Purchasing for Environmental Resources Department

Additional:

– Serves as Emergency Action Personnel in the event of a dam related emergency.

– Writes articles for Lake Currents on hot topics involving the Association’s water resources.

– Creates and maintains QMS records including procedures, work instructions, and job descriptions of all employees of lakes cost center.

– Attends meetings and makes presentations to the Maintenance and Ecology and Lake Users Committees.

– Attends several training courses and conferences throughout the year pertaining to professional development (E&S certification courses and exam, Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association, Dam Meetings, etc.).

Qualifications: A minimum of B.S. in limnology, biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resources management or other closely related field. M.S. preferred. Five years experience in management of water resources, especially recreational lakes, can be substituted.

Assistant Professor, Marine Ecology

The Biology Department in the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks to hire an Assistant Professor in the field of Marine Ecology to begin September 1, 2025. Successful candidates will be expected to undertake externally funded research in marine ecology defined broadly and to satisfy important teaching needs of the Department of Biology in ecology, zoology, conservation biology, and/or evolution. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree and relevant postdoctoral research experience. Lead Field Instructor-Summer 2025

Description

Wildlands Studies invites candidates holding an MSc or PhD to serve as a Lead Instructor and submit a proposal for a new six-week field program in Summer 2025. The Lead Instructor will establish a new program under Wildlands Studies guidance, and then direct students on an academically rigorous, wilderness-based six-week field study to explore habitats and cultures of international locales. We are specifically seeking a new international location, outside the current offerings listed on our website, that will attract students and cover a wide variety of topics and terrain within our mission.

Renowned for its accredited researched-based undergraduate field programs, Wildlands Studies instructors enhance their own credentials with unique opportunities to teach in the field while engaging students in active research. Students consistently report that their Wildlands Studies experience added depth and meaning to their on-campus classes and “changed their lives”.

In addition to our open call, we specifically welcome proposals for new locales in the Pacific realm, Southeast Asia, Japan, Norway and South America. Students earn 5-15 quarter credits for three field classes covering Environmental Studies, Field Research Practices, and Environment and Culture. Lead Instructor is responsible for on-going seminars, lectures, instruction, guided field work and field methods, and assessment of all student work, as well as group dynamics and the overall well-being of participants. Requirements

Available to establish and lead a program for Summer 2025. Firsthand knowledge and experience of field study location required. Applicants must have Masters degree in hand; PhD Candidates and/or completed PhD preferred. A qualified Lead Instructor will have experience leading field study programs and teaching at the undergraduate level, specifically upper division environmental studies classes; a good sense of humor, flexibility, patience, and understanding; be a physically fit experienced outdoorsperson capable of leading students on day hikes and multi-day overnight backpacking trips; a capable and skilled group facilitator able to spend 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with up to 16 students aged 18-23 for the duration of the program managing associated interpersonal dynamics; an accomplished logistical planner capable of managing the overarching and day-to-day logistics, program finances and communications; certified in First Aid and CPR (preferably WFR) and able to competently and confidently manage medical emergencies and other medical situations should they arise. We require our program staff to be able to easily transport students in vehicles.  This means we are looking for individuals with a clean driving record, manual transmission experience, knowledge and competence driving in international locations and, if needed, the ability to drive a right-hand drive vehicle on the left side of the road. Reference checks, fingerprinting and background checks are required before any offer is finalized.

Program Dates

We are specifically accepting proposals for 6-week programs in Summer 2025 (June 24-August 6). International locations that include a wildlife study or marine focus always preferred.  Review www.wildlandsstudies.com for details.
