Research Technician – Aerial Observer

The New England Aquarium is seeking a highly motivated Aerial Observer Seasonal Field Technician to participate in aerial surveys for whales, dolphins and sea turtles in New England waters. Duties will include serving as an observer on aerial surveys; quality checking data; coordination with other observers and the flight crew; and analysis of vertical photographs for the detection and identification of marine mammal and turtle species. The successful applicant will be required to attend and satisfactorily complete aircraft and marine safety and survival training.

This is a temporary position expected to last approximately 6 months, with the possibility for extension based upon funding and performance. The schedule will be 2 – 5 days per week based upon the availability of the applicant, but applicants must be available to be on call for fieldwork during scheduled days. On call schedules are flexible and determined approximately 1 – 3 weeks beforehand. This is primarily a field work position, requiring some irregular hours and some long days on flight days, as well as occasional work on weekends and holidays. Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to get to and from New Bedford airport as early as 8am. Office work can be conducted remotely and with flexible hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Participate in all aerial survey activities, including observer logistics, scientific data collection, monthly reporting, photographic and data analysis, and ground contact.
Act as aerial observer on surveys for cetaceans and sea turtles, including participating in aerial photography.
Maintain flight and data logs, assist with data quality checking and assurance, assist with summarizing data and writing reports.
Maintain safety and camera equipment and assist with preparation and in-flight troubleshooting
Photo-analysis of digital imagery for species detection and identification, data processing and analysis.
Assist with right whale photo-identification and catalog processing.
Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience

A or B.S in Biology or related science.
Minimum of two years research experience after college.
Minimum of six months previous aerial and/or boat survey experience.
Photo-identification experience strongly desired.
Participation in right whale, other large whale, and turtle aerial research program.

Planning Engineer

Loudoun Water has an immediate opening for a Planning Engineer in the Capital Programs and Planning Department. The Planning team interfaces with all aspects of Loudoun Water; permitting, data analysis, modeling, research, capital and private development, O&M and finance. Field Research Technician

The Maritime Aquarium’s mission is to ignite a connection to Long Island Sound and the ocean to enrich the lives of all people and inspire action to protect our blue planet. For 37 years, the Aquarium has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Norwalk and the region. The second largest family attraction in Connecticut, and 50 miles from New York City, the Aquarium hosts nearly 450,000 guests annually. Its primary exhibits take guests on a voyage from the shallow salt marshes and estuaries to the depths of the Long Island Sound and the ocean beyond, culminating with habitats for sharks and harbor seals.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Conservation team works across Connecticut and New York on field ecology projects related to the health of Long Island Sound. Research projects include beach surveys for horseshoe crabs, salt marsh surveys and experiments, and boat-based marine debris retrieval. The Field Research Technician is a temporary position that assists field research activities across the department’s full project portfolio.

Director of Environmental Management

Responsible for the safe, economical and efficient operations and management of the Departments of Water Quality and Solid Waste in compliance with all State and Federal environmental regulations. Responsible for the County’s implementation and management of the MD State MS4 NPDES permit. Responsible for fiscal management and overall budgeting, problem solving and public relations for the Division. Responsible for all administrative and operational aspects of both agencies’ facilities together with facilities owned by private owners/municipalities and operated by the County. Responsible for local Nutrient Management and Tributary Strategies necessary for long-term environmental compliance in the County.

The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field. Master’s Degree in Business Administration or Public Administration is preferred but not required. Fifteen (15) year’s experience in management of major public utilities with progressively increasing responsibilities in a public water and wastewater agency/solid waste and recycling facility.

A working knowledge and formal training in waterworks and waste systems is preferred. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Possession of a Professional Engineer License is required (a Maryland license is preferred but not required).

Applicant should have considerable knowledge of the theory and practices of environmental management and public works administration. Climate Change Mitigation & Modeling Coordinator

The Agency of Natural Resources Climate Action Office (CAO) is recruiting for an Environmental Analyst V to bring technical expertise to the Agency’s climate mitigation work. This position will support mitigation programs, policy development, and rulemakings, advancing efforts to account for and reduce Vermont’s greenhouse gas emissions.

This position will act as Vermont’s technical and administrative representative to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a multi-state cap-and-trade program designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector. As RGGI representative, this position will manage Vermont’s allowances, participate in regularly scheduled working groups, and provide briefings to leadership. This position will also manage the State’s climate mitigation modeling, utilizing existing data and projections of economic activity to forecast emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. These modeling efforts will allow State Agencies to consider the impacts of various mitigation programs and policies, ultimately supporting their design and implementation.

This position will coordinate closely with other State Agencies and Departments including the Public Service Department, the Agency of Transportation, and the Department of Environmental Conservation. Further, this position will coordinate with counterparts in other states through participation in relevant regional and national working groups on themes such as greenhouse gas emissions reporting and modeling.

Experience with greenhouse gas emissions modeling and familiarity with market-based emissions reduction programs will be important for success in this position. Project management and communication skills, specifically as it relates to translating technical information into plain language, will also be important. Proficiency in Excel is required. The position’s duty station is located in Montpelier.

Environmental Quality Manager

Under the supervision of the Director of Animal Health, the Environmental Quality Manager provides on-site operational management of the Environmental Quality (EQ) Lab in Boston and Quincy, and oversees EQ technicians at our Central Wharf facility. The Environmental Quality Manager plays a key role in supporting animal well-being by ensuring all habitats are maintained within stable, closely monitored environmental parameters. Responsibilities include monitoring, recording, interpreting, and reporting water quality data, implementing appropriate corrective actions, and ensuring all work aligns with institutional standards and complies with federal, state, and local regulations.

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Tuesday – Saturday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
