Zoology Field Technicians

The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) at Colorado State University, Warner College of Natural Resources, seeks 2-4 technicians to conduct field work on various projects in Colorado for the summer of 2023. CHNP’s main office is Fort Collins, Colorado, and the work will be primarily conducted in Southeastern Colorado.

Colorado Natural Heritage Program Zoology Team conducts remote, field-based surveys for various Colorado taxa. In 2023, the Zoology Team will be conducting rare amphibian surveys in Southeastern Colorado with potential additional projects that include bat surveys/acoustic monitoring, boreal toad monitoring, and general zoological inventory projects.

Projects:
Rare Amphibian Survey Project in Southeastern Colorado
This project is a Colorado Parks and Wildlife funded project to survey for rare amphibian species in Southeastern Colorado. Species include Couch’s Spadefoot Toads, Green Toads, and Western Narrow-mouthed Toads. This project employs a dual-frame sampling design where historical and randomized sites are surveyed in a standardized method. The majority of the sites are in Otero, Bent, Prowers, Las Animas and Baca Counties. The survey sites are predominately located on the Comanche National Grasslands with additional sites at State Wildlife Areas, TNC properties, and on private land. Technicians will travel to selected sites and complete surveys that adhere to the sample design and record all data on field forms. Most site visits will require tent camping in remote areas with occasional hotel or bunk house stays. A field vehicle will be provided. After a training period, the technicians will be expected to work independently while coordinating closely with the project leader.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a B.S. degree in zoology, biology, natural resources, ecology, or related field.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license for field work
• Ability and willingness to hike off-trail in remote areas over rugged terrain for much of the field season required.
• Physically able and willing to work long hours in the field required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• B.S. degree in zoology, biology, natural resources, ecology, related field, or equivalent field experience (at least 2 years of field surveys).
• Ability to use a dichotomous key to identify animal species
• Experience collecting quantitative and qualitative field data in remote settings

Ecologist II

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), located in Northern Virginia outside Washington D.C., seeks an experienced ecologist to execute the mission for its countywide Landscape Legacy and Sustainability Program. The primary goal of the program will be to protect the capital investments made in ecological restorations on FCPA parkland which totals more than 25,000 acres and contains many rare species and habitat types. The Ecologist II will be responsible for the long-term management and maintenance of ecological restoration projects, rare plant community protection, and wildlife management support in FCPA properties. The primary duties of this position include managing ecological restoration projects to ensure ecosystem services such as biological diversity, water regulation, and erosion prevention. Tasks involve implementing maintenance plans, overseeing contractor ecological maintenance activities such as invasive plant control, monitoring the ecology and progress of restoration sites, and participating in prescribed burns. Other duties encompass protecting rare-classified plant communities and high-quality natural areas on parkland. The Ecologist II will install protection measures, manage invasive plants, control herbivory, modify forest stands, and implement erosion control strategies to protect FCPA’s most important natural communities. Project Coordinator, Alamito Creek Conservation Initiative

Function: Works closely with the BRI, SRSU, Dixon Water Foundation, Rio Grande Joint Venture, and other private and government conservation partners to establish and maintain synchronous lines of effort to accomplish the conservation goals and strategic priorities of the Alamito Creek Conservation Initiative (ACCI).

Scope: All projects performed by the ACCI, regional-level riparian restoration efforts.

Essential Duties: Oversees the planning, preparation, and execution of Alamito Creek Conservation Initiative operations. Develops the strategic restoration program for the ACCI. Organizes all meetings with conservation partners and landowners. Seeks additional funding from nongovernmental organizations, state and federal agencies, and assists cooperating landowners with cost-share opportunities. Enables the implementation and monitoring of on-the-ground projects, which will allow the development (with partner assistance) of a list of accepted regionally specific Best Management Practices (BMP) for riparian restoration.
The ACCI Coordinator will also serve as a primary lead in outreach and education efforts by coordinating field days and workshops that can assist in demonstrating the benefits of BMP implementation to landowners and other constituents.

Requirements: Advanced degree in Range, Wildlife, Natural Resource Management or related field.
Documented supervisory experience in natural resource conservation programs, and a record of effective leadership, management, and organizational skills. Familiarity with the function and management of riparian systems.

Park Naturalist

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Park Naturalist to join its Greenspace Management Division.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Project Manager

Position Summary: The Project Manager position is a full-time position in bridge construction in California Trout’s regional office in San Diego, California. California Trout (CalTrout) is an environmental nonprofit organization, based in San Francisco with eight regional offices state-wide, whose mission is to protect and restore wild trout, steelhead, salmon and their waters throughout California. The Project Manager will be the Owner’s representative during implementation of a major bridge construction project in San Diego County to benefit endangered Southern California steelhead.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to participate in an $18M environmental construction project that is underway to help restore the Santa Margarita River and its aquatic ecosystems. The successful candidate will have strong project and construction management skills; experience in bridge construction and contracting; will provide guidance on risk assessment and liability issues; and will work internally with CalTrout staff and externally with the Construction Manager, County of San Diego, landowner and stakeholders to successfully complete this bridge construction project by mid-2024.

Job Description: The Project Manager will work externally with contracted Construction Manager, engineers, biologists, permitting consultants, San Diego County staff, state and federal agency personnel, landowner and stakeholders; and internally with CalTrout project and finance staff to implement the project on time and on budget. Externally, the PM will work with Construction Manager on construction implementation. The PM will work with stakeholders and landowner to communicate project schedule to trail users and oversee project site restoration and associated contracting. Internally, the PM will manage all aspects of CalTrout’s bridge project finances including cash flow, invoicing to multiple state agencies, progress reporting, prevailing wage compliance; perform contracting and procurement functions, and advise on risk and liability issues. The PM will report to the Regional Director and work with CalTrout administrative staff to implement the Project Data Management Plan, Long-Term Monitoring Plan and Land Management Plan.

Naturalist Program Coordinator

The Naturalist Program Coordinator is key to building and executing a dynamic program that will create enriching opportunities for Cal Poly students and faculty to help create a more environmentally literate and engaged public. This position will provide dedicated support for the collaborative efforts between partner organizations and the Cal Poly Center for Coastal Marine Sciences. Research Associate/Senior Research Associate

The Forest Modeling Research Cooperative (FMRC) in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech, is hiring a full-time research associate or senior research associate. The FMRC is a leading research cooperative in the region that develops forest growth and yield models, decision support tools, and advanced inventory methodology for both planted and natural forests. The research associate will be directly involved in all aspects of the cooperative’s research program and other day-to-day operations. The Senior Research Associate will provide additional support through developing and leading original research projects that are in line with cooperative goals and objectives.

Ecological Monitoring Coordinator

The Forest Stewards Guild is hiring a full-time Project Coordinator position in Santa Fe, New Mexico to support field data collection, GIS operations, data management, statistical analysis and data reporting related to landscape monitoring for the Guild’s Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program (CFLRP) projects. As a key member of the staff running the Guild’s CFLRPs, your position will ensure that the projects meet objectives to restore forests and watersheds to desired conditions and ecological integrity. Candidates should have strong analytical and organization skills, knowledge and experience in ecological monitoring and conservation, a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, and a desire to advance creative solutions to better understand the complexity of forest and watershed management.

The Ecological Monitoring Coordinator will support strategic, landscape-scale, cross-boundary forest management as part of the Rio Chama CFLRP that began in early 2022, and the Zuni Mountains CFLRP. The Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining various forms of monitoring data, analyzing and preparing data for reports, working collaboratively with multiple partners, and assisting model runs to understand how forest and watershed treatments are impacting landscape resilience.

The successful candidate will work with Guild staff, partners, and members of the 2-3-2 Cohesive Strategy Partnership (www.232partnership.org) to identify existing data sources, collect and manage field data, and analyze monitoring data using spatial tools like GIS and statistical tools such as Excel and R. The Coordinator will organize cross-boundary, cross-jurisdictional data sharing and analysis to promote landscape monitoring across tribal, federal, state, and privately managed lands in northern NM and southern CO. In addition, the Coordinator will apply best practices to develop monitoring and evaluation methods that enhance our efforts. As additional project needs are identified, the Coordinator will collaboratively develop solutions to move project outcomes forward. The successful candidate will help fulfill the Guild’s mission of ecological forestry in the Southwest United States and advance existing projects as needed by providing staff support for other forest conservation projects in the region.

The successful candidate will have a degree in forestry, ecology, natural resource management, geography, geographic information systems, statistics, or related field with professional experience. This individual will have excellent organizational, communication, and written skills, the ability to work outdoors in remote locations, and a desire to support ecological forestry. Previous experience managing data and working collaboratively with diverse partners in the Southwest, is highly desirable.

Director of Conservation

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is looking for its next Director of Conservation. The position of Director of Conservation exercises considerable authority and direct responsibility in the overall management and direction of the conservation department in a manner which continues the Zoo’s leadership on a national and international level. The Director of Conservation will ensure that the goals and objectives established by the Pittsburgh Zoo in support of its mission and strategic plan are met both at the zoo and the zoo’s 1,000 acre off sight facility, the International Conservation Center (ICC). Responsibilities include departmental strategic planning, program development and implementation of both in situ and ex situ programs, collaborating with other institutions and organizations, personnel hiring, training and evaluation, budget development and management, participation in site and facility planning, assistance in development and fundraising activities, professional networking, public relations and public speaking. This is a Senior Leadership position which reports to the Vice President of Living Collections and may be required to serve as on-site supervisor for the entire facility.

Oversees the preparation and monitoring of the Departmental budget and oversees project budgets.
Responsible for writing grant proposals and follow-up reports.

Actively participates in spring and fall staff retreats;

Other Functions:

Occasionally serves as zoo senior supervisor on weekends and holidays.
Develops and coordinates safety effort within the department;
Must be an active member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.

Qualifications
Experience and Education

Position requires a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, zoology, environmental science or a related field or equivalent life experience. Minimum of six years’ experience in conservation or related field in a supervisory capacity is required. Four years’ experience with national and international conservation initiatives that include programs that the candidate has personally developed and initiated successfully. Valid PA driver’s license (within 6 months of hire).

Computer skills – Fluency in Microsoft Office.
