Associate Wildlife Technician

The Associate Wildlife Technician is a 24-hour per week position working with the Wildlife Director and two Wildlife Technicians, assisting with the daily maintenance and care of the wildlife facilities and the animals kept within said facilities for exhibition, education, and rehabilitation. Candidate must be willing to work a non-traditional schedule, including weekends and holidays.

General Duties and Responsibilities

Daily care of education and exhibit animals, including aquarium maintenance, cleaning and maintaining enclosures, feeding, and routine health assessments
Routine maintenance of facilities, including aviaries, rehabilitation and exercise cages, Wildlife Clinic, etc.
Address public inquiries (i.e., phone calls, e-mails, walk-ins, etc.)
Assistance with completion of paperwork regarding permits, husbandry, treatments, progress, etc.
Admission and examination of raptors, reptiles, and amphibians brought in for rehabilitation
Care of rehabilitating raptors, reptiles, and amphibians, including cleaning, feeding, and medical treatments
Assistance with training and managing Wildlife Clinic volunteers and interns
Miscellaneous duties as needed
Friday – Sunday work schedule, with additional days as needed
Other duties as assigned
Salary Range: $18-22/ hour

Qualifications

A Georgia Department of Natural Resources raptor and reptile rehabilitation permit is required for this position. Candidates without this license may be considered for the position; however, this license must be obtained within 6 months of hiring
Extensive animal care experience required, with wildlife or fisheries experience preferred
Degree in natural sciences preferred
Current tetanus vaccination required and rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) desired; must be willing to obtain PEP vaccine (cost covered by CNC)
Good physical condition required (e.g., able to lift 50 pounds, walk several miles over varying terrain, ability to work in inclement weather, etc.)

Assistant Scientist

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for an Assistant Scientist position in Marine Biology and Fisheries. This position is situated at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center Marine Mammal and Turtle Division located in Miami, FL and will collaborate with scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Universidad Veracruzana, and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

We seek an experienced and productive researcher to join our group and participate in projects using passive acoustic monitoring to assess soundscapes, anthropogenic noise, and the distribution, occurrence, movements, and density of marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic, and the Caribbean. The SEFSC Marine Mammal Branch is conducting broad-scale studies of cetacean occurrence and density in the Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic, and the Caribbean using vessel-based towed arrays, sparse arrays of moored passive acoustic monitoring units, and acoustic-equipped gliders. This research will improve our understanding of marine mammal ecology and evaluation of restoration projects to address the injury to marine mammal populations that occurred from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The incumbent will develop methods to use these data to estimate marine mammal occurrence, density, abundance, trends, and noise impacts to support environmental planning and impact assessments by a variety of agencies.

Job duties include:

developing and implementing signal-processing tools for the detection, classification, localization, and density estimation of marine mammal acoustic signals
developing and implementing underwater acoustic propagation models to estimate marine mammal source levels, marine mammal detection ranges, and anthropogenic noise impacts on marine mammals, and evaluate effect size of modeled parameters and associated uncertainty
quantifying absolute noise levels in long-term acoustic recordings and evaluating spatiotemporal variation in noise sources and levels, including effects of noise-reduction technology implementation
project management including handling field work logistics and communicating with project team members and stakeholders, and writing reports
leading and participating in passive acoustic data collection surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic, and Caribbean
writing reports and presenting findings in scientific settings including in peer-reviewed publications

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, marine biology, engineering, applied mathematics, or related discipline and at least 1 year of relevant postdoctoral experience. The position requires demonstrated experience developing and implementing automated detection, classification, and localization algorithms for bioacoustic signal analysis; developing and implementing underwater acoustic propagation models and simulations using appropriate models and oceanographic and sound source input data; working knowledge of ocean noise characterization and metrics to quantify ocean noise; demonstrated experience working with acoustic signal processing, including demonstrated ability to work with large, multi-year passive acoustic datasets; experience developing and leading research analyses; and demonstrated experience deploying and maintaining underwater acoustic hardware. Necessary skills include proficiency in acoustic analytical techniques and software (e.g., Matlab, R, IDL, Triton, Ishmael, XBAT Raven, and PAMGUARD) and statistical and/or mathematical programming languages (e.g., R, Matlab). Applicants with experience in marine mammal bioacoustics; machine learning; Bayesian statistics; statistical simulations of individual/group behavior; spatially explicit capture-recapture modeling; and/or habitat modeling are preferred. Desire and capability to participate in multi-week deployments on a research vessel and work productively in a field/shipboard research environment is required.

Park Ranger

Under the general supervision of the Park Manager, Park Rangers enforce State and Local Laws to maintain peace and ensure a safe environment for all park users.

Park Rangers protect life and property, assist visitors, collect fees and balance daily receipts. They conduct building and grounds maintenance, resource/wildlife protection, educational and recreational programming, community outreach, public relations, and related duties for the Scott County Conservation Board system. This includes recreational areas, recreational facilities, natural areas, trails, greenways, and wildlife areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

May be on call to assist with Rec Trac or accounting issues.

Works with maintenance staff to perform all necessary facility and grounds maintenance to include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, mechanical and other work on remodel or building projects.

Installs, inspects, and repairs park playgrounds; mows grass, cuts brush, hauls gravel and garbage, removes snow, and maintains all sidewalks, roadways, and trails.

Oversees aquatic operations, maintenance, setup, and teardown; prepares for annual inspections, maintains regular State water tests and records of results.

Performs specialized natural resource projects such as, but not limited to prescribed burns, timber stand improvements, wildlife habitat improvements, fishery habitat, reforestation, prairie rehabilitation, wetland restoration, Wood Duck and Mallard nesting structure maintenance, administration of the park management deer hunt, trail maintenance and erosion control, pesticide applications and hazardous materials handling.

Provides input in the areas of natural resources and recreational management to blend park usage with current conservation practices.

Develops and delivers educational programs, exhibits, and information on conservation and related topics; provide education and community outreach to various groups and the public; assists other staff with programs and classes.

Assumes a supervisory role in the absence or at the direction of the Park Manager.

Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.

The Pollinator Conservation Specialist will support Xerces’ private-sector partners in designing and implementing cutting-edge conservation systems for bees and beneficial insects on farms across California and the U.S.

Supervised by Senior Pollinator Habitat Specialist, Food Systems and Living Farms Project Lead, this position will collaborate closely with farm managers, crop industry leaders and key staff at some of the largest food companies in the world to design and implement biodiversity and regenerative practices on farms that serve the manufactured food and fresh produce industries, with a special focus on the California citrus industry.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with key staff at select food companies to identify and reach out to farms that will implement pollinator habitat and climate smart agriculture practices.
  • Work with leaders in the California citrus industry to implement pollinator conservation, soil health and carbon sequestration practices on citrus farms
  • Develop large-scale habitat planting plans, including protocols for site preparation, planting methods, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Support the promotion, recruitment, and on-boarding of farms into Xerces’ Bee Better Certified farm and food product certification program, including technical assistance throughout the application process.
  • Document pest management practices on farms and work with farmers to foster the adoption of Integrated Pest Management strategies.
  • Directly participate in the establishment of hedgerows, wildflower meadows and cover crop systems in heavily managed agricultural settings, including direct collaboration with farm staff and labor.
  • Perform monitoring of on-farm pollinator and beneficial insect habitats throughout the region.
  • Support partners with science-based advice and consulting on native bee conservation, on-farm ecosystem services and nature-based pest and climate solutions.

  • Supervised by the Senior Pollinator Habitat Specialist, Food Systems and Living Farms Project Lead, this position will collaborate closely with Xerces’ growing team of Pollinator Conservation Specialists who design, implement and monitor cutting-edge conservation systems for bees and beneficial insects on farms across the U.S. This position sits at the intersection of data science and science communication, and it plays a key role in advancing applied science practices, invertebrate conservation and regenerative agriculture.
  • Streamline and manage existing geospatial and other data management systems for optimal field data capture, easy statistic retrieval and analysis, and reporting.
  • Provide GIS and mapping technical support to Xerces staff and conservation practitioners.
  • Perform regular quality control of incoming field data, GIS and related files. Work with other staff to fix errors and improve workflow.
  • Research and evaluate environmental and landscape data sets published by wildlife, ecology and agricultural researchers; major government agencies, such as the USDA and EPA; and other NGOs for planning and restoration purposes.
  • Help streamline habitat restoration project design by sourcing and combining external environmental data sets – such as soils, flooding potential, or climate change predictions – with internal research and practice data into user friendly web services and/or interactive tools for internal and external use.
  • In coordination with Xerces Conservation staff, develop a plant selection tool order to streamline pollinator habitat conservation planning for specific landscapes where Xerces staff are working.

Restoration Technician

Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks two to five Restoration Field Technicians to join BCI’s Conservation Department. The Restoration Field Technician will work as part of the Restoration Team in the Habitat Protection & Restoration Program (HP&R).

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

This position is open to a highly motivated individual willing and able to conduct fieldwork safely and efficiently in a variety of environments. The successful candidate will perform a variety of conservation/restoration activities for HP&R that benefit bats and other wildlife. These tasks include but are not limited to fence construction, pond/tank development and improvement, erosion control, native vegetation planting including agave planting, eDNA collection, and seed collection, acoustic detector installation/management, use of hand/power tools, invasive vegetation removal and control, working in proximity to heavy equipment, participating in program certification and training, planning projects, writing reports, managing data, and conducting training exercises. Extensive travel, primarily in the western United States, will be required, with much of the work being conducted in rough topography in remote areas with limited access. Camping will sometimes be necessary at field sites (gear is available upon request). Additionally, this position may assist other teams within HP&R. These duties may include subterranean biological surveys, geospatial analysis, cultural surveys, and environmental compliance.

Work Schedule:

This is a part-time, intermittent position that will work on an as-needed basis. Scheduling for field trips is ideally done with 3 months advance notice but often is limited to 1-month advance notice. Field projects may require multi-day travel within the United States with fieldwork trips of 1-2 weeks in duration. Field sessions typically last five weekdays, including paid travel days, though some projects may last longer and may include working weekends. Travel and fieldwork days range from 8–12 working hours, sometimes more. Overnight lodging will usually be provided in hotel rooms or shared house rentals, with private bedrooms for each team member. Some projects may require overnight camping; BCI will provide basic camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag and pad, stove, etc.) as needed. Office work, when available, is flexible and will occur remotely from a home office. The use of a computer will sometimes be necessary to complete office work (a computer can be available upon request). Dependent on fieldwork, data management, and reporting needs, work schedules will vary from 1 week per month up to 4 weeks per month.

Director of Urban Forestry

The Texas Trees Foundation (TTF) serves as a catalyst in creating a new green legacy for North Texas through transformational, research-based plans that educate and mobilize the public to activate the social, economic, environmental, and health benefits that trees and urban forestry provide for a better quality of life.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Director of Urban Forestry is a senior leader responsible for shaping and directing all of TTF’s urban forestry programs and activities. The Director of Urban Forestry aligns the activities of internal and external collaborators and cultivates program-based relationships with state, and federal government agencies, private stakeholders, funders, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and the media to advance the understanding and use of urban trees for their benefits to human and ecological health.

As part of TTF’s Operations team, they will:

Lead and grow TTF’s planting, consulting, workforce, and neighborhood greening programs and staff in alignment with TTF’s mission and strategic objectives.
As TTF’s leading forestry expert, refine and apply TTF’s urban forestry methodologies and approach across the organization, including across its major capital projects.
Shape and implement TTF’s urban forestry education activities with partners, urban forestry associations, and the general public.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

Program Management

Systematically increase the scale and quality of TTF’s tree planting and maintenance programs across four program areas, increasing trees planted annually from ~1,000 + ~1,500+. Maintain or increase the survivability of TTF’s trees to 90%+ over 3-years.
Working closely with the Asst. Mgr. of Planting Operations, envision, plan, approve, and direct all volunteer/grassroots tree planting projects and events. These events are to be conducted with the highest professional standards and expected to encourage donors to seek repeated tree planting opportunities with the Foundation.
Oversee TTF’s TXU Energy Urban Tree Farm and Education Center, working closely with the Asst. Mgr. of Planting Operations and Tree Farm Supervisor. Ensure the tools and mechanization necessary for the Foundation’s tree planting projects grow with the Foundation’s tree planting activities. Oversee and ensure tree planting plans include appropriate species and landscape material selection and that nursery stock is of high standards.
Lead TTF’s workforce team, providing direction to the Workforce Program Coordinator. Working with the Asst. Mgr Planting and the Workforce Coordinator, the Director of Urban Forestry oversees the development of an annualized work cycle for workforce participants to support the ongoing urban forestry program and project needs of the Foundation.
Working with the “Lead Forester” (Sr. Mgr. Consulting), oversee TTF’s Consulting projects to provide technical assistance to urban forest stewards, including major landowners, institutions, and governmental entities. Review and edit all related reports to ensure they align with TTF’s longstanding record of professional excellence.
Oversee TTF’s South Dallas Greening Initiative, working closely with the Neighborhood Greening Manager. This program aligns all of TTF’s programs (including plantings, workforce, Cool Schools, and education) in a single location to maximize the health and environmental benefits in place. While elements of this work will extend beyond the Forestry team, the Neighborhood Greening Manager, under the supervision of the Director of Forestry, serves as the primary program manager and coordindates work across multiple partners and workstreams.
Collaboratively develop program/project plans and program strategies, subject to executive approval.

Technical Leadership

Serve as leading expert for TTF in forestry, promoting operational innovation and use of best practices both within the Urban Forestry Programs and across TTF’s large capital projects.
