Sustainability and Energy Engineering Specialist

The University of VirginiaÔÇÖs Office for Sustainability is seeking a Sustainability and Energy Engineering Specialist. Sustainability at the University is interdisciplinary, multi-faceted and highly collaborative, encompassing academics, research, and operations and a range of topics, including greenhouse gases, energy, water, waste, food, equity, and civic engagement.

The Sustainability and Energy Engineering Specialist is a core member of the University of Virginia’s Office for Sustainability team and will contribute to developing solutions to meet university-wide goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and ensuring overall environmental stewardship. Reporting to the Associate Director, the Sustainability and Energy Engineering Specialist focuses on supporting innovative projects that incorporate best practices in sustainability and conservation in the use of energy, water, raw materials, and other resources through retro-commissioning, energy audits and technical analyses.

The position will support Building Efficiency Program, Smart Labs, LEED, and other projects to improve operations and maintenance, enhance building automation and energy management systems through field improvements and software programming, ensuring accurate metering and billing, and advocating for sustainability. The incumbent supports the goals of providing consistent, cost-effective, and efficient use of energy and other natural resources by applying expertise and knowledge of building systems to inspect, evaluate, analyze, and solve complex building mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing deficiencies. The position includes data analysis responsibilities and will be responsible for organizing, maintaining, analyzing, and projecting, with a high level of accuracy and integrity, sustainability-related metrics to evaluate progress towards pan-university goals, in topics such as energy, greenhouse gas emissions, water, and waste.

Responsibilities include:

Supports the design and implementation of innovative and independent conservation projects that incorporate best practices in sustainability and conservation in the use of energy, water, and other resources through retro-commissioning, energy audits and technical analyses.

Supports the implementation of projects and manages them to completion ensuring schedules are met and disruptions are minimal.

Calculates conservation (MMBtu, kWh, gallons, tons of materials) and investment (dollars) payback periods to support sustainability initiatives.

Measures and documents all achievements (metered) or quantified (calculated) and writes or participates in the development of communication materials on programs.

Identifies, evaluates, recommends, and/or implements sustainability opportunities by reviewing energy, water, and material trends using the building automation/energy management system.

Collaborates with clients and provides excellent customer service in resolving customer service inquiries.

Conducts timely and comprehensive design reviews of sustainability issues for new construction or renovation projects, acting as an owner’s representative for sustainability as needed.

Assists with LEED certification on new construction and provides LEED training and guidance to the University community while serving as a central information source.

Ensures educational materials for building occupants and maintenance personnel are innovative, positive, and motivating, and support and enhance sustainability goals set for each audited facility.

Supports training of maintenance personnel on initiatives implemented in their buildings / areas of responsibility.

Revises and enhances preventive maintenance to support sustainability initiatives.

Fosters, supports, and guides sustainability efforts by faculty, staff, and students, engaging stakeholders in stewardship programs and projects. Participates in committees or working groups as requested.

Applies expertise and knowledge of building systems to inspect, evaluate, analyze, and solve complex building mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing deficiencies.

Supports teams consisting of commissioning, controls, and air balancing expertise; metering, Systems Control, and maintenance personnel, and other subject matter experts are well managed and organized in conducting the audits and implementing improvements.

Fosters a safe work environment by complying with all OSHA, BOCA, federal, state, and local regulations.

Required Skills:

Technical knowledge of or background in operations and maintenance of engineering principles and systems, including HVAC/mechanical systems or controls.

Required Education & Experience:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, sustainable design, or similar field.

Experience: With an engineering degree, a minimum of 2 years’ professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls is essential. A degree in sustainable design or similar non-engineering field will require a minimum of 3 years’ professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls.

Preferred Experience:

Four years of experience with HVAC and controls design or project management.

Certification/registration as a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Green Associate, LEED Accredited Professional, CEM (Certified Energy Manager), Engineering in Training or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for working our project(s) from inception to close with detailed knowledge of each project phase and process.
Comply with and enforce the corporate health & safety program.

Energy Efficiency Engineer

Michaels Energy is seeking an energy engineer with retro-commissioning experience and excellent communication skills to deliver technical support for utility energy efficiency programs in Minnesota. This position will perform energy studies for medium and large commercial and industrial buildings.

Technical tasks include building investigations to identify energy-saving measures, project costing, and calculating energy savings and ROI. Client and customer communication is critical in this role. Types of communication include meetings, presentations, and non-technical and technical writing. We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about energy efficiency and removing barriers for the customer that will result in the implementation of energy efficiency projects.

Data Collection

Develops data collection plans before customer visit

Sustainable Procurement Program Manager

The Sustainable Procurement Program Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategies, guidance, and technical resources for City staff to comply with the CityÔÇÖs Sustainable Procurement Policy and harness public agency purchasing power to transform markets to support a more equitable, healthier, and sustainable society. The Program enables healthier natural systems (air, water, soil, biomes), reduced exposure to toxics, reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, ethical business practices, and economic prosperity throughout product and service lifecycles and supply chains. To achieve results, the Program engages key stakeholders within bureaus, the business community, and nonprofit advocacy groups, and collaborates with sustainable procurement colleagues at other agencies (public and private) at a regional, national, and international level.

The Program is a requirement of the CityÔÇÖs Sustainable Procurement Policy (ADM 1.09) and program activities align with other City sustainability strategic goals and policies such as the Green Building Policy (ENB-9.01) and the Climate Emergency Workplan 2022-2025.
The Sustainable Procurement Program is housed within Procurement Services.

This position is responsible for the overall design, development, planning, administration, and implementation of the Sustainable Procurement Program and specific projects therein. The position supervises staff within the Program and conducts all high-level, complex administrative functions to sustain the program such as strategic planning, policy and procedure development, budgeting, performance tracking and accountability, and executive-level engagement as well as other internal and external stakeholder engagement.

Sustainability Planner

PRIMARY DUTIES
The Sustainability Planner is responsible to the Sustainability Department Manager and Director of Community Development for professional-level performance of assigned sustainability, planning and transportation duties that will raise the profile of and advance Nashua’s sustainability agenda internally and externally.

Duties shall include at a minimum: leading and collaborating on energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction and sustainability initiatives across City departments, with a strong emphasis on project management, coordination and public outreach, and supporting the development, implementation, monitoring, and measurement of a comprehensive City-wide Master Sustainability Plan that would incorporate sustainability into all aspects of the City, and continually advance the City through the next innovations of environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable programs. Candidates should be prepared to initiate and implement energy efficiency projects, including project development, coordination with facility stakeholders, contract and vendor management, and monitoring to achieve successful results.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant experience. BachelorÔÇÖs Degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science/Policy, City/Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation, Geography/Geographic Information Science, or related degree preferred. General knowledge of multimodal transportation planning and administration and an in-depth understanding of issues related to climate change and energy management. Technical computer skills to perform the requirement of this position, including ArcGIS and all necessary software. Excellent organizational, communication, computer, writing and analytical skills, including the ability to present complex data and principles to non-technical audiences. Must possess a valid driverÔÇÖs license.

Global Corporate Solutions

Reporting to the Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Administration Officer, Global Corporate Solutions (GCS) provides strategic solutions for internal clients (IBRD, IFC, and MIGA) by deploying staff and contractors in the most efficient way, with the highest quality, for the right budget. Within GCS, there are three main functions: Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Security, and Corporate Services (such as food services, conferences, travel, printing, multimedia, and translation and interpretation). GCS is a global team of about 350 staff and 1,400 contractors, with approximately 45% of staff located in country offices.

GCS is seeking a dynamic, high performing individual as Global Environmental Sustainability Officer to develop, manage and implement GCSÔÇÖ Environmental and Sustainability work-program, primarily focused on facilities and global real estate. This includes program implementation, tracking, change management, and reporting to reach the WBGÔÇÖs corporate emissions target to reduce GHG emissions by 28% (from 2016 baseline) by 2026.

The position will be based in Washington DC, USA. The selected candidate will report to GCS Director.

Duties and Accountabilities
ÔÇó The position reports to the Director, GCS. The role focuses extensively on Environmental Sustainability and requires a strong mix of technical experience in that area covering a global organization, such as environmental policies, strategies, and regulations relevant to corporate sustainability.
ÔÇó Develop, manage and monitor GCSÔÇÖs global sustainability program and oversee GCSÔÇÖ environmental sustainability strategy, including working closely with GCSÔÇÖs HQ Real Estate and International Real Estate teams and other key stakeholders on the programmatic implementation of projects related to the reaching the WBGÔÇÖ corporate sustainability target (i.e., reducing GHG emissions by 28% from a 2016 baseline by 2026), WBGÔÇÖs carbon neutrality commitment, Paris alignment and a net zero trajectory.
ÔÇó Manage qualitative and quantitative data tracking and report periodically on the performance of sustainable practices across the global real estate portfolio.
ÔÇó Provide technical expertise and advise on prioritization of projects to reach corporate goals and design sustainable facilities for the future, including research on facilities best practices on environmental policies, procedures, and practices; support related building audits; act as point of contact for annual capital planning cycle related to carbon-reduction facilities-level improvements; find synergies with other corporate policies guidelines and practices (procurement for example); and communicate information that will motivate staff to participate in footprint reduction.
ÔÇó Maintain key partnerships to environmental programs such as the World Bank Corporate Responsibility Program, other IFIÔÇÖs, and the real estate and integrated facilities management team to coordinate and manage projects and events.
ÔÇó Track environmental facilities initiatives globally for GCS-managed facilities. Identify and support initiatives that country offices can undertake to make their facility more sustainable and/or eligible for green building certification.
ÔÇó Oversee annual environmental data collection. Collaborate with communications on environmental data annual reporting including World Bank Annual Report, Sustainable United Nations, GRI, and TCFD.

Selection Criteria

ÔÇó Advanced degree in environmental science, engineering, or equivalent experience and knowledge in sustainability, building management, and green initiatives.
ÔÇó A minimum of 5 years of relevant business experience in sustainability area in private sector, international organizations, consultancy, or large non-profit organizations.
ÔÇó Ability to manage and organize concurrent activities, respond quickly to changing priorities, and deliver effectively to unanticipated demands.
ÔÇó Strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated client orientation, and ability to work independently while committed to work in a team-oriented, multi-cultural environment.
ÔÇó Previous experience implementing and/or managing an environmental management system is desirable, but not required.
ÔÇó Demonstrated experience of working in large complex organizations with international presence in emerging markets.
ÔÇó Working knowledge and experience of sustainability and green building trends is required.
ÔÇó Experience writing and contributing content to corporate sustainability reporting preferred.
ÔÇó Good team player with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team, work effectively in and influence a team, and network effectively across boundaries.
ÔÇó Project management experience, including managing multiple projects and stakeholder relationships key to delivering projects / programs as well as day-to-day management of projects is required.
ÔÇó LEED AP Operations and Maintenance or similar credential preferred.
ÔÇó Experience using credit360 or similar online sustainability data collection tool preferred.
ÔÇó Business orientation with financial skills including ability to evaluate cost/benefit and develop business cases for decision-making and strong proposal writing skills.

Deliver, implement, and evaluate the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative on-farm sustainability, animal care and workforce development programs on member farms. Connect producers to funding opportunities available through partnerships and outside sources.

ESSIENTAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITYES:

Conservation & Sustainability Partnership Areas
Identify best practices across member farms and help to accelerate the adoption of best practices on member farms
Conduct Nutrient Management and Conservation Plans Implementation and Assessments
Expand conservation compliance program across MDVA ÔÇô identify funding for all farms to improve environmental footprint.
Connect members to funding for implementation of conservation best management practice Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program Area
Conduct FARM Animal Care Evaluations, FARM Environmental Stewardship Assessments and FARM Workforce Development Assessments
Follow-up on any Mandatory Corrective Action Plans (MCAPs) or Continuous Improvement Plans (CIPs)ÔÇô document follow-up visits and improvements in Salesforce and FARM Database
Develop FARM follow-up letters after the initial visits and evaluations
Assess risks that may be discovered on some operations and provide the opportunity for a proactive approach to develop a continuous improvement plan or path forward
Assess the implementation of the MDVA FARM Animal Care SOP packet and identify areas that need to be improved and other resources that MDVA can develop to assist our membership in meeting the marketplace
Implement the FARM program with the highest level of integrity. Best practice is that evaluators do not have a prior or extensive relationship with a dairy to eliminate
General Responsibilities
Organize training for member farms in cooperation with animal welfare experts, veterinarians, land grant universities and
Work with other Member Services Staff to ensure a consistent message to the membership
Assist in identifying farms that can host customers for farm tours and assist in the farm tours
Collect data on farm that is quantifiable and aggregated and easily communicated to customers.
Develop innovative programs that show the local brand to the end consumer

TRAVEL

Must be able to set up a home office within our cooperative footprint, travel within assigned territory (VA, MD, PA), traveling to the corporate office in Herndon, VA as needed. Will also travel to meetings, events, and as necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Up to 90% travel with limited overnight travel required.
