INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $18 to $20 per hour (with effect from 1/1/2025) based on current class year. This internship will begin on June 2, 2025 and continue through end of Summer 2025.

Interns must be located in New York State or an immediately adjacent state while working. It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist Clean Transportation Program staff in administration of vehicle and charging incentive programs, which includes tasks such as development of marketing materials, event planning, project application review and conducting research to inform program design

Clean Energy and Legal Department Intern

The Energy Manager will be responsible for providing direction and management regarding SUNY Oswego’s energy consumption and reduction efforts. The Energy Manager will work integrally with the Facilities Services Department to provide expertise regarding energy efficiency following NYSERDA PON 3701 – On-site Energy Manager Program. This position seeks to improve the college’s profitability by delivering operational improvements and cost management while simultaneously promoting sustainable practices.

The Energy Manager will complete the tasks associated with NYSERDA PON 3701 including:

Develop an Energy Management Plan within the first three months of employment to act as a guide map for the college’s short-term and long-term energy management efforts
Draft comprehensive project proposals that aim to reduce campus energy consumption and administer the projects from conception to completion
Monitor and record energy consumption and cost trend data to tabulate and compile monthly energy and cost data reports for all utility consumables

Job Description

This position will support DVRPC’s Office of Sustainable Energy in designing and managing existing and new programs that assist local governments, institutions, and partners in the region with reducing utility costs and improving air quality. Existing programs include the Regional Streetlight Procurement Program, the Sustainable Energy Partnership, and the Regional Benchmarking Program. The Office is developing additional models to support residential programs and local government operations, including evaluating the feasibility of establishing a Regional Energy Center that supports local energy priorities in southeast PA. This position will also advance existing planning efforts, such as the MSA-wide Climate Action Plan under EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program.

This is a grant-funded position with funds that are active through the end of the calendar year 2027.

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience with local and regional energy programs. The work will include data collection and analysis, policy research, coordination with partners, development of communication strategies and messaging, assistance with public participation, outreach, and engagement activities, and relationship building with traditional and non-traditional stakeholders.

Sustainability Specialist

The Sustainability Specialist I, under general supervision, coordinates practices related to the Office of Sustainability & Campus Enrichment (OSCE). Areas of leadership include the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), undergraduate internship program, event planning, managing support employees, office strategy, and fostering a culture of sustainability.

Essential Duties/Tasks

Program and Project Development – Assists in the planning, developing, implementation, and evaluation of STARS submission programs and projects with a goal to continually improve the institution’s performance. Creates, maintains, and leads a cross-functional team of STARS stakeholders from across campus. Communicates with various campus constituencies and stakeholders to accumulate the data needed for STARS assessments and works with stakeholders to implement additional strategies needed to improve the STARS rating. Manages budget for small projects or components of large programs under the direction of the program director. Participates in project development meetings, collaborating with team members to establish project goals and objectives.

Energy Manager

The Energy Manager has responsibility for identifying and implementing measures to reduce energy use at Tulane University, beginning on the university’s Uptown campus. This position maintains and analyzes energy use data, and uses these data and building audits to develop, prioritize and implement measures that reduce energy use and optimize building performance. These measures may include immediate adjustments and repairs, building scheduling, commissioning programs, occupant education, and retrofits. This work includes preparing program scope statements, specifications, and building data, as well as the solicitation and evaluation of proposals, and making recommendations for award. Program schedule, completion and inspection of work performed, and documenting resulting energy savings are also included in this position’s assigned duties.

Monitor compliance with RESNET standards by RESNET Accredited Rating Providers and their Quality Assurance Designees (QADs) by conducting assessments remotely and onsite as needed.
Conduct in-depth, onsite investigations of compliance and ethics complaints; convey findings to a RESNET Quality Assurance Project Manager and offer recommendations to the RESNET Managing Director of Quality Assurance for correcting any deficiencies.
Investigate anomalies and results collected through the evaluation of ratings as directed by Quality Assurance Team managers. Determine appropriate action to address any deficiencies.
Prepare and provide written reports and photo documentation in support of compliance and ethics investigations.
Provide field support and regular communications to RESNET QADs/Quality Assurance Contractors and Builders.
Provide regular summary reports to the Managing Director about field activities, meetings, and regional developments.
Notify the Managing Director of Quality Assurance when field training is needed and conduct field training with RESNET QADs / Quality Assurance Contractors. Document all training, including but not limited to what was covered, who participated, and the date and time for the training.
Provide technical support to RESNET QADs / Quality Assurance Contractors.
Conduct field visits and onsite quality assurance monitoring at the request of authorized stakeholders (e.g., builders, utility program implementers, homeowners, etc.).
Strengthen RESNET’s regional presence and enhance the RESNET Quality Assurance Team’s knowledge of regional codes, utility programs, and building practices by attending regional meetings and forming working relationships with key stakeholders at the state and local level.
Perform file quality assurance reviews in accordance with RESNET’s MINHERS Chapter 9 and Federal Program Home Certification Organization (HCO) Agreements.
Assist the RESNET Quality Assurance Team’s efforts to improve RESNET Standards by participating in assigned Standard Development Committee (SDC) meetings and drafting amendments/comments as directed.
Assist the Quality Assurance Field Specialist with formal training of QADs.
Stay abreast of current industry trends and regulations, technical data, new standards, new equipment, and audit practices. Offer recommendations for enhancing RESNET practices and requirements related to quality assurance and RESNET Standards.
Assist other RESNET Quality Assurance Team members with administrative duties related to implementation of RESNET’s Quality Assurance Programs as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

Minimum 5-7 years of experience as HERS Rater or Rating Field Inspector (RFI) equivalent.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as a certified RESNET Quality Assurance Designee (QAD) or equivalent.

Skills & Competencies:

Strong knowledge of sustainable building materials, energy-efficient technologies, and green building standards (RESNET, BTR, ESG, Green MBS, LEED, BREEAM, HERS rating etc.).
Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to inspire and educate others on sustainability principles.
Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability reporting frameworks.
Analytical mindset with the ability to assess and improve sustainability performance metrics.
