Climate Adaptation Specialist

The San Francisco Estuary Partnership leads a regional strategy, the Estuary Blueprint, to protect and restore the water quality and ecological integrity of the Estuary from the Golden Gate to the Sacramento Delta. The Estuary Partnership convenes agencies and organizations in the region and catalyzes regional work towards our collective vision of a healthy Estuary. We work hand-in-hand with communities, funders, agencies, and other key stakeholders to collaborate, innovate, and adapt to the dynamic needs of the Estuary and its watershed communities against a backdrop of global climate change. The Estuary Partnership is part of the National Estuary Program, a place-based program of US EPA, sitting within the Association of Bay Area Governments and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Climate Adaptation Planner for the San Francisco Estuary Partnership will work as part of the Climate Resilience Team. They will work on a range of projects focused on nature-based solutions (NBS) and community engagement. The Climate Adaptation Planner will help to champion a range of NBS project types, including horizontal levees, ecotone levees and green stormwater infrastructure. They will be a key partner on a slate of on-the-ground projects around the San Francisco Estuary. This will include providing technical assistance to local partners, leading community engagement efforts and project management for grants, including reporting, contract management and tracking grant outcomes. Finally, the Climate Adaptation Planner will directly collaborate with local educators and leaders to understand and integrate community and Tribal perspectives with a strong equity focus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Support on the ground partners with project planning, management and regional technical assistance

Participate on planning teams for nature-based shoreline adaptation planning processes across the SF Estuary, including tracking short- and long-term outputs and ensuring success on project delivery.
Act as a “bridge builder” to track success of the project and consistency across projects. Bring your subject matter expertise on climate adaptation solutions, community outreach and education, environmental science and planning to support on the ground efforts.
Ensure consistency with the Estuary Partnership’s Estuary Blueprint.
Support development of new projects and seek funding.

Project and Grant Management

Maintain impeccable grant management standards for local, state and federal grants, including grants from the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Regular grant reporting to funders.
Track project outputs and outcomes.
Manage ledgers and process invoices.
Manage grant-related funding agreements and contracts with partners.
Track project workplans and work with partners to ensure delivery of outputs and outcomes.

Participate as a team member on the Climate Resilience team and as part of the broader Estuary Partnership

Support the Transforming Urban Water Initiative, an initiative working at the interface of nature-based adaptation and water quality improvement in partnership with wastewater treatment plants. This work includes technical assistance, planning for workshops and meetings, and special projects.
Support tracking for the Estuary Blueprint.

Strategic Leadership (30%):

Establish and coordinate a leadership team to drive implementation of the CIG 2024-2029 strategic plan. Fundraising and Financial Stewardship (30%):

Work closely with EarthLab and the College of the Environment Advancement and Administrative teams to develop and steward diverse sources of grant and non-grant support from private, federal, state, foundation and other sources. This work will also entail working directly with the UW state and federal relations team.

Partnership Development and Strategic Networking (20%):

Work in coalition with leaders from other organizations to build capacity for climate resilience efforts in the state, regionally and nationally and to build visibility for CIG’s work and reputation. Develop and maintain an engagement plan and network of partners through relationships with key public, private, non-profit and/or tribal organizations and their leadership. Develop and maintain relationships with state agency staff focused on climate resilience issues as well as state legislators and the governor’s office.

Management (20%):

Lead in an empathetic way that prioritizes DEIJA, supports teamwork, enhances trust, builds collaboration and results in a motivated workforce. Hire, supervise, evaluate, develop and mentor CIG staff. Directly supervise an executive assistant and CIG’s most senior staff including a deputy director, the Washington State Climatologist, the University Director of the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, the lead-Principal Investigator for the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative, and potentially CIG’s communications lead. Oversee development and management of annual budget.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master’s degree or terminal professional degree or the equivalent in knowledge and experience in a climate adaptation-relevant discipline + 9 years relevant experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Nine (9) years’ experience in a complex organization providing research, services, and programs relevant to climate resilience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Formalizing revenue-generating sustainability support services, designed to support clients in achieving sustainability goals:
Identify, track and address consumption and waste streams that can be reduced, substituted or diverted.
Redesign processes, invest, and deploy resources to effect changes in the areas identified.
Demonstrate and track the value (economic, risk mitigation, efficiency) of the program efforts utilizing generally accepted industry principles.
Partner with Tax & Audit entities supporting the client to drive reportable results.
Internal sustainability initiatives and accreditations.

Building high-quality relationships with senior client team members (C-Suite, VP, and Director level at existing clients).
Contributing to the growth of Triumvirate via knowledge and methodology sharing, case studies, proposal development, marketing collateral assistance, and recruiting.
Lead, grow, and develop a professional team along a continuum of experience and skill sets; drive utilization goals, develop career paths for junior consulting staff, validate proof of career choice, and assist the leadership in developing strong sense of firm identity and community.
Active participant in industry events, representing Triumvirate as a leader in Sustainability and related services.
Drive starburst and growth opportunities at existing engagements.
Presenting and leading client presentations and contributing to constructive dialogue around insights and proposed solutions.
Ensure that required administrative tasks (timesheets, backlog reports, expenses) are completed accurately and in a timely manner.

Basic Requirements:

BS/BA in engineering, environmental sciences or related fields, graduate degree or equivalent is required.
5+ years of working experience in environmental and or safety operations within one of TEI client sectors (Life Science, Industrial, Health Care, Higher Education, Commercial Real Estate).
Well established and known subject matter expert in the rapidly evolving strategic, operational, and financial areas of sustainability and able to identify unmet issues and concerns for resolution and increasing client satisfaction within the client’s C-Suite, VP, and Director level operations.
Able to initiate and support business development efforts – Support Account Managers in on-going client developments and expansion of current projects.
Solid verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels of Triumvirate and senior client staff.
Development and/or modification of robust offering content and collateral to support existing client project expansions / extensions.
Ability to inspire, be a leader, and coach junior consultants in their career paths.
Comfort with traveling and being present at client sites.
Experience in delivery and managing client services at all levels of the organization.

Senior Sustainability Consultant

Säzän Consulting Services (SCS) Team is seeking a dynamic, experienced, multi-tasking thought leader to join our multi-disciplinary team as a Senior Sustainability Consultant.

General Responsibilities

• Lead sustainability consulting services for complex projects from planning through post-occupancy. Many projects are pursuing a variety of green building certifications such as Evergreen Standard, LEED, Green Globes, WELL, ZNE and the Living Building Challenge.
• Many clients, while not pursuing any sustainability protocol certification, are still interested in “doing the right thing.” Such clients require a unique, customized approach to establishing performance criteria relative to minimizing ecological impacts and optimizing systems performance and building occupant health, safety, and comfort.
• With the guidance and support of senior staff, collaborate with owners and design teams to develop building strategies, track and report certification status, and drive certification to the finish line.
• Analyze and prepare technical calculations related to the water use, energy use, air quality systems, waste management, etc.
• Independently manage project deadlines and work schedule. Manage your time to stay on track with billable activities, within project budgets and time allocations, and project prioritizations.
• Manage delegation and mentorship with junior staff members.
• Contribute to marketing efforts to grow SCS Team’s industry leadership.
• Contribute to fiscal management of projects.
• Develop leadership skills and experience in anticipation of future leadership position.
• Pursue relevant specialties, continuing education, additional credentials with support of the SCS Team.

Qualifications

• Position requires 4+ years of related professional experience providing sustainability protocol consulting for the built environment.
• BA/BS in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Environmental Studies, Business Administration, or equivalent training and experience.
• LEED BD&C, LEED Homes, or EBOM, and/or WELL AP certified
• Exceptional ability to convey complex topics to many audiences verbally, in writing, and electronically.

Physical Requirements

The employee will likely be required to sit at a desk and look at computer monitors for much of the day. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may also be required. During site visits, it is possible that the employee would be engaged in the following activities:

• Long periods of standing or walking.
• Intensive stair climbing.

Energy Advocate

The Environment Department is hiring an Energy Advocate who can identify, inform, and guide community members who are likely to benefit from Mass Save energy efficiency programs. The Energy Advocate will collaborate with All In Energy, utility partners, Mass Save program vendors, and colleagues in other City departments to raise awareness of Mass Save programs and help deliver energy efficiency and clean energy benefits for residents in the program’s neighborhoods of focus. The Energy Advocate will be supervised by the Carbon Neutrality Project Manager. As part of their onboarding, the successful candidate will receive training on Mass Save program offerings and community engagement approaches in the City of Boston.
Responsibilities:

Conducts in-person and digital outreach to Boston residents and small businesses in the four priority neighborhoods to raise awareness of and increase participation in Mass Save programs.
Actively communicates with community members to guide them through the application process and facilitate communication with stakeholders to address program participation barriers.
Develops and implements a community-based social marketing campaign to promote community-wide behavioral change by collaborating across a diverse group of partners.
Identifies, attends, and tables or presents at community events.
Assists community members who need support and guidance to enroll in Mass Save programs.
Tracks and records barriers to program participation in collaboration with utility partners.
Supports coordination between program vendors and community members to increase program participation rates.
Attends biweekly meetings with All In Energy and program partners.
Participates in trainings provided through the Community First Partnership.
Submits reports to All In Energy to support tracking and exploring solutions to program participation barriers.
Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in customer service, community organizing, and/or community outreach. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.

Comfortable communicating with a variety of residents, small business owners, and other stakeholders in person, by phone, & over email.
