Clean Energy Engineer

The N.C. Clean Energy Technology Center serves as a resource for innovative, clean energy technologies through demonstration, technical assistance, outreach and training.

The Clean Energy Engineer will assist in the performance of NCCETC’s activities under several projects including the US DOE-funded Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership and the USDA Rural Energy for America Program as well as to help develop and implement projects, and contribute to delivery of other services, offered by the Center.

The individual in this position will work with the program team to complete technical analysis for solar PV, combined heat & power (CHP) and other clean energy technologies at industrial, commercial and institutional facilities. The work also includes identifying and disseminating best practices of CHP project development and operation, as well as policies or programs supporting this investment. The position requires the candidate to be organized and entrepreneurial with a technical familiarity of distributed generation and efficiency technologies.

Primary duties will include, but are not limited to:

Providing technical services in support of a program or project manager to evaluate feasibility of investment in distributed generation or efficiency technologies at their site
Preparing technical reports and papers on issues affecting distributed generation and energy efficiency
Delivering presentations at clean energy conferences or workshops and support training engagements
Supporting responses to consumers, industry representatives, nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in regulatory proceedings or other relevant policy forums
Identifying new project and technology area opportunities, and assisting on developing funding proposals that are in line with the mission of the NCCETC
Supporting administrative functions for assigned projects, including preparation of regular progress reports, quarterly project reports, and budgets as needed and required by funding agencies
Updating program technical resources and publications.

Working with and mentoring student interns, interacting with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students at the University as requested to support research projects related to distributed generation;
Supporting the Center’s applied research activities relating to renewable energy technology, grid integration of distributed generation, microgrid deployment, and advanced building and systems energy efficiency technologies;
Collaborating with other NCCETC programs and NCSU departments on projects with broader sustainability objectives;
Outreach to industry, federal, state, & regional governmental contacts, and other stakeholder contacts, including contact database management;
Tracking team’s client focused activities including requests for assistance, assistance provided, meetings, site visits, technical services and policy support; and
Willingness to travel for in- and out-of-state site visits, presentations and meetings.

Minimum Education/Exeperience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; and
Minimum of 2 years relevant experience, with a preference for work experience in distributed generation project analysis and/or development, including combined heat and power, solar PV, fuel cells, district energy, energy storage and microgrids or other related fields.

Energy & Sustainability Engagement Coordinator

The Energy & Sustainability Engagement Coordinator will report to the Campus Energy Manager and provide leadership and support in addressing our University-wide Sustainability reporting and commitments; manage campus sustainability communications (website, social media, newsletters); Promote on campus and community sustainability engagement, coordinate student, faculty and staff programs, develop and encourage campus-wide sustainability events, and collaborate with the local community on sustainability initiatives. This position may also provide support related to energy initiatives, including grant and rebate submissions.

Supporting and Implementing University-wide Sustainability

Lead institutional crosscutting initiatives through partnerships with other campus entities, (for example: Campus Garden and Edible Food Forest Project)
Provide logistical support to various energy and sustainability committees including scheduling meetings, providing meeting summaries to participants, addressing key outcomes pertaining to engagement activities.
Provide data collection and data tracking management for internal and external reports. Examples of reports include: AASHE STARS; Second Nature; Green NY (EO22 annual reporting, formerly EO4 and EO18)
Provide logistical support to develop programs and engagement initiatives to support public and community-based commitments to sustainability. Examples include Second Nature Commitments to carbon emission reduction goals, Climate Action Planning support, resiliency assessment, as well as engagement externally with community organizations. This may include being part of an external organization board or advisory committee. Other examples include annual conference presentations, campus film series, speakers, and others.

Communications

Maintain the sustainability website. Responsible for all aspects of the continued development of the site, content creation, and the publishing of new material.
Publish, archive, edit, seek contributors, and create content for the Newsletter.
Assist with SUNY Cortland sustainability brand development and implementation in consultation with the Marketing Office.
Manage social media strategies including the development, scheduling, and posting of content to Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), etc.
Coordinate with the Communications Office to develop communications to the campus and greater community regarding sustainability public relations.
Responsible for expanding the reach of all SUNY Cortland sustainability print, web, and social media content.

Fostering Student Engagement and Outreach

Develop and cultivate student sustainability leaders.
Mentor student environmental leaders through attending events, conducting one on one meetings, and facilitating collaborations surrounding large events and other programing activities.
Provide leadership with coordinating and advancing the Green Rep Program.
Supervise student interns, Green Reps, graduate students, and volunteers for the Sustainability Office.
Advise student groups that seek to address climate change, social justice, and other sustainability issues.

Community Engagement/Innovation

Serve as a SUNY Cortland liaison to community organizations and businesses that are working on sustainability and resiliency initiatives under the direction of the Campus Sustainability Coordinator and Campus Energy Manager.
Strategize, plan, and implement events including the Green Days, Community Resiliency Events, Greenflix film Series, and others.
Collaborate with colleagues to generate new programs or activities that involve students, staff, and community members to learn about and further engage in addressing climate change, social justice, and additional sustainability issues.

Energy Management Support

Provide direct support to the Campus Energy Manager related to implementing energy programs and training. Assist with grant and rebate submissions related to energy initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree
Minimum 6 months experience facilitating and/or leading group program initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field supporting sustainability, outreach, program management, or related.
Supervisory experience.
Direct work experience within a sustainability focused organization.
Experience with building systems including HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, power, equipment, laboratories, processes, metering, and building automation.

Associate Programs Director

We are seeking a dynamic Associate Programs Director with expertise in designing and leading community trainings, a passion for mentoring early-career staff, and a strong systems mindset to join our Program team. The AMC is a diverse organization, operating about 30 public lodging facilities across the Northeast from large front-country lodges to off-the-grid huts and camps. We also own 100,000 acres of forest land in Maine that generates offset credits from three forest carbon projects and provides sustainably harvested timber to local markets.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING AT AMC

Lead collaborative development with relevant departments of short- and long-term action plans to implement the goals and strategies set forth in the strategic plan.
Work with Finance Department to complete the development and implementation of a system for annual tracking and reporting of AMC’s Scopes 1, 2, and some Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
Work with Finance and Operations Departments to identify, analyze, and implement projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from AMC’s buildings and vehicle fleet.
Work with Finance and Operations Departments and outside contractors to identify, analyze and implement projects that increase on-site renewable energy generation at AMC facilities.
Work with Finance and Marketing and Communications Departments to implement an online system for selling AMC forest offset credits to members, guests, and the public.
Work with Marketing and Communications Department on outreach and educational materials around net zero, including making presentations on AMC’s net zero initiative to internal and external audiences, and serve as AMC spokesperson for media and other inquiries.
Work with Development Department to identify and secure outside funding for net zero projects.
Work with relevant staff and volunteers to reduce Scope 3 emissions from chapter- and volunteer-led programs and activities.
Work with relevant staff and vendors to identify and implement opportunities to reduce Scope 3 emissions from AMC’s supply chain.
Support the Conservation Policy Department in the development of and advocacy for AMC’s policies in relevant areas; represent the AMC on relevant public policy working groups and in other forums.

Environmental Sustainability Officer

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking to hire an experienced Environmental Sustainability Officer to join the Corporate Services and Facilities (CSF) Department to advance the IMF’s transition to a lower carbon footprint. In this role, the Sustainability Officer will work as part of a team that drives institutional buy-in and follow-through on corporate objectives for sustainable operations. As a subject matter expert, the selected candidate will provide input to corporate strategies, perform assessments, identify gaps, strengthen the measurement and monitoring of progress, introduce best practices and help articulate the case for changed behaviors and practices in support of a lower carbon footprint. The Sustainability Officer will be expected to develop strong working relationships with stakeholders, understand business needs, increase, and enhance engagement across the institution, and identify improvement opportunities across the full range of business operations. The position will be located at IMF’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

Strategy and Policy:

Make significant contributions towards the development of short- and long-term corporate environmental sustainability strategies and work programs, and draft policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Experience in design and implementation of green initiatives within an organization ranging from environmental sustainability strategies for services, operations, and physical assets.

Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of a relevant advanced university degree supplemented by a minimum of four years of professional experience in Environmental Science, Economics, Law or Business Administration, Real Estate, Facility Management, or associated disciplines, or equivalent; or a bachelor’s degree, supplemented by a minimum of ten years of relevant professional experience in Real Estate, Facilities, Hospitality or Design and Construction field, is required.
Professional qualification, master or certification in Environmental Management, Environmental Reporting and/or Sustainable Real Estate or Facility Management would be an advantage.

Sustainability Counselor

Position Introduction

The Sustainable Living Summer Counselor will participate in leading camp participants on their journey in learning about the environment and real-world applications of sustainable practices.

Sustainability Assistant (Part-Time)

The City of Hartford is seeking a part-time Sustainability Assistant to facilitate and administer community projects related to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in the community. The Sustainability Assistants will report to the City’s Sustainability Director in the Office of Sustainability and Office of the Chief Operating Officer. The Sustainability Assistant will support a variety of activities related to the implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan, City Plan and much more.
Part-Time Sustainability Assistant Pay Rate: $21.00 per hour

Under general supervision, plans and executes departmental projects and initiatives. Evaluates projects for improvement. Performs outreach under the direction of City staff and/or contractors; outreach locations may include Neighborhood Revitalization Zone meetings, local events, farmers markets, community centers, online, and more. Postdoctoral Associate, Institute for Global Sustainability

The Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (BU-IGS) is recruiting for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship to establish energy justice indicators for offshore wind energy development. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct cutting edge research at the intersection of energy, climate change and social science with real-world impacts on policy, industry, and community empowerment. The fellowship offers the opportunity to publish, engage with leading researchers and practitioners, and develop expert knowledge in an emerging arena.

The position is supported by a grant from the US Department of Energy to a collaborative research team across Boston University, the University of Rhode Island, and the University of Delaware. The project is of importance to the Biden administration’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030, the Infrastructure Law, and the Justice 40 Initiative, which seeks to decrease energy burden, increase clean energy jobs and economic development, and build energy democracy in disadvantaged communities. The research team will partner with environmental justice communities surrounding coastal ports that are poised to serve as regional hubs for the offshore wind sector on the East Coast.

The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to a variety of research activities, for example community engagement and community visioning workshops, literature review, outreach and advisory mechanisms, development of methods and data collection instruments, and drafting of the suite of indicators. The project research team will provide mentorship and oversight, and the postdoctoral fellow will also join a vibrant team of faculty, staff, and students affiliated with BU-IGS. This is a hybrid position at the BU-IGS office at the center of the vibrant Boston University campus, with access to shared office space, meeting rooms, and research amenities.

Appalachian Carbon Forester

Living Carbon is seeking an experienced and fast-paced Professional Forester based in the Appalachian Region of the US to join our team to support Forestry Operations, with a strong emphasis on forest establishment and contractor management. You will be responsible for field supervision of silvicultural activities and forest monitoring, utilizing your expertise in forest measurements, project management, and contractor relations. You will work in coordination with Living Carbon’s supply chain, land, and carbon science teams as well as other internal stakeholders. Your primary objective will be to support the Forestry Team in achieving its forest carbon project implementation and operations through focused, rapid coordination of project activities.

We are seeking a proactive and collaborative self-starter with the ability to manage afforestation and reforestation projects in the Eastern US, particularly on marginal to degraded lands. A successful candidate will have demonstrated experience effectively establishing and building relationships with internal and external project stakeholders, has a clear understanding of the reforestation process, state-by-state documentation requirements and forest management plans, and risk management of forest threats (pests and pathogens). Ideally, a candidate will be adaptive and creative, skilled with GIS/GPS, and can excel in a fast-growing forestry biotech startup environment.
Responsibilities

Operate efficiently within our team of forestry professionals, providing field and office support of forest project implementation, with an emphasis on speed and agility. Perform tasks according to project budgets, timelines, and resources.
Administer service contracts and serve as field point of contact for contractors, including planting crews, site preparation crews, government natural resources personnel, forestry agencies and conservation organizations.
Support the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) team with data collection, measurement, and monitoring activities over the duration of the project. This includes providing field support on forestry-specific data collection methodologies, ensuring accurate and reliable data collection, and collaborating with the MRV team to validate and report project outcomes.
Willingness and ability to regularly travel to project sites for due diligence, site preparation, planting season and continual forest monitoring.
Contribute to optimizing a playbook to expand our forest project implementation to tens of thousands of acres of projects.
Help develop planting project design and execution, working alongside internal supply chain and land origination teams.

Qualifications

5-7 years of experience successfully implementing large-scale forestry projects, with an understanding of forestry operations, sustainable land management, and forest carbon sequestration.
Strong work ethic and capability to function at a high level on internal teams with common goals while maintaining an emphasis on moving quickly.
Familiarity with data analysis, including the ability to interpret and utilize scientific research, GIS data, and remote sensing technologies to inform decision-making. Skilled at forest measurement practices and the corresponding use of relevant desktop and mobile forestry software and tools.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

0-1 years year of professional experience in sustainability, energy, climate, and/or environmental management consulting
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy, sustainability, or environmental discipline required
Well-developed interpersonal skills, maturity, credibility, confidence, and integrity
Strong oral and written communication skills, and use of Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint
Ability to develop and present analyses using programs such as Microsoft Excel, Access, and Power BI
Ability to work independently, multitask, and manage time efficiently
Ability to collaborate remotely across geographies and platforms
Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific software, spreadsheets, technology, math principles, data science, and tools.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in engineering, energy, sustainability, or environmental discipline
Demonstrated familiarity with sustainability issues and frameworks such as supply chain management, circularity, LCA, CDP, GRI, TCFD, and/or the GHG Protocol

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $48,600-$80,300
