Aquarist

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is an outgrowth of the Dubuque County Historical Society, which also operates the Mathias Ham Historic Site, is home to the National Rivers Hall of Fame, and supports a national outreach program called RiverWorks Discovery.

NMRMA maintains a wide variety of animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, birds, and invertebrates. The Aquarists are responsible for the husbandry of the animals owned by or entrusted to the River Museum, ensuring the upkeep of live animal exhibits and enclosures, maintaining life support systems, and other tasks related to the animal collection. Aquarists help to maintain written records, participate in continued learning about the animals, plants, and artifacts in the collection, and engage in activities related to enrichment, training, quarantine, animal welfare, nutrition, and preventative maintenance. Aquarists are expected to be able to cover all animal areas and to support team members as needed. Aquarists will be appointed to level 1, 2, or 3 as dictated by their individual experience and skill level, with 1 being entry level and 3 being highly skilled/experienced. For this role, experience with aquatic invertebrates (jellies, corals, freshwater mussels, etc.) is desired.

Role Description

Act as primary caretaker for assigned exhibits, systems, and animals
Provide daily cleaning and care for animals and life support systems
Make daily observations of animals for health assessment
Feed animals according to established schedules and recommend changes as necessary
Keep all husbandry areas clean, organized, and hazard free
Perform minor maintenance tasks
Work safely with and around potentially hazardous chemicals and dangerous animals
Monitor and manage water quality in assigned exhibits and holding tanks
Maintain lighting as appropriate for the species.
Ensure alarms and monitoring systems are set appropriately and functional
Maintain written records in accordance with established industry and organizational practice and policy
Ensure daily and weekly check sheets are current
Update animal information in a database
Participate in the construction and care of exhibit life support systems, including routine preventative maintenance on equipment
Dive at least 12 times per year to remain an active member of the dive team

Qualifications – Level 1

A Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in biology or related field is preferred
Professional exposure to aquariums and/or zoos and a background related to working with living organisms

Senior Site Engineer

Cadmus seeks a Senior Site Engineer to join its Energy Services Division.

Cadmus seeks candidates with strong analytical, research, and communication skills, and experience in mechanical or electrical engineering, or a strong technical background from related fields.

Qualified candidates are expected to assess potential energy projects, as well as inspect and collect data for completed energy projects on behalf of Cadmus’ clients. Typical project activities will include: conducting site audits and assessments at commercial, industrial, multifamily, and residential facilities; inspecting systems and equipment for code compliance, quality installation practices, utility program requirements, and performance considerations; collecting baseline or as-found data from facilities, such as sequences of operation, setpoints, schedules, occupancy, and production profiles; using diagnostic equipment to measure key performance parameters; deploying temporary monitoring equipment to collect timeseries data; and harvesting trend data from controls systems. This role is not focused on impact and engineering analysis, but those skills are considered a plus for the successful candidate.

Biologist I

The Walker Basin Conservancy (WBC) works to restore and maintain Walker Lake while protecting agricultural, environmental, and recreational interests throughout the Walker Basin. The Conservancy is passionate about reversing the collapse of Walker Lake, acquiring water rights from willing sellers along the Walker River and protecting this water in-stream for the benefit of Walker Lake. To date, the Conservancy has acquired 57% of the water needed to save Walker Lake.

WBC is recruiting a Biologist I (Plants and Biological Soil Crusts) to join our team.

This position will work in collaboration with the US Geological Survey (USGS) – Western Ecological Research Center. The Biologist I position will work with a growing team focused on vegetation and biocrusts within a larger program dedicated to the topic of sagebrush ecosystems. The focus of this position is assisting in the synthesis of information as well as project design and planning. Some analyses and writing may also be expected, with a focus on management and restoration of vascular plants and biological soil crusts. Some field work will be associated with the position. Field work can involve 8-day hitches, camping in remote locations, and participating in safety check in threads. Projects are funded primarily by state and federal partners (e.g., Nevada Dept. of Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service).

Environmental Program Manager

Director, Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination

Fairfax County, with the largest population of any locality in Virginia, seeks to be the leader in equitable climate action for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The County’s Board of Supervisors has set ambitious goals for climate action, including mitigation through pursuit of carbon neutrality, and adaptation and resilience to the effects of climate change.

The Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination (OEEC) leads and coordinates the implementation of these climate initiatives across County departments in pursuit of a ‘whole of government’ approach to these challenging issues. OEEC manages this effort through six interagency workgroups that meet quarterly to facilitate coordination and avoid duplication of effort.

Fairfax County seeks an experienced, dynamic, and innovative leader with well-honed leadership and executive skills to serve as the next OEEC Director. Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

The Department of Natural and Physical Sciences at Shepherd University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Science with specialization in an Ecology related field. Environmental Compliance Manager

The Environmental Compliance Manager oversees the University of Vermont’s compliance with a broad range of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including the CAA, CWA, SPCC, EPCRA, RCRA, TSCA, and related DOT regulations. The role leads the development and administration of environmental policies and procedures; maintains and updates required permits, plans, and regulatory reports; and serves as a primary liaison with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. The position also develops, delivers, and coordinates training to campus partners and EHS personnel on a variety of environmental compliance topics.

Key program responsibilities include managing the University’s air permit; leading air emissions calculations and associated reporting; overseeing air pollution compliance and facility record tracking (fuel use, refrigerant leaks, and related data); conducting EPCRA Tier II reporting for all UVM locations; maintaining the University’s SPCC Plan; and coordinating UST inspections, registrations, and compliance activities.

In addition, the Environmental Compliance Manager provides strategic leadership for hazardous building materials programs, such as asbestos and lead, including supervision of the Hazardous Materials Supervisor and technicians.

The role also directs the University’s hazardous waste management program, including supervision of two Environmental Safety Technicians. As part of the hazardous waste program, the Environmental Compliance Manager maintains and updates the University’s TSDF operating permit, prepares hazardous waste generation and hazardous waste minimization reports, develops strategies for pollution prevention, and advises the campus community on regulations and issues related to the collection and disposal of hazardous waste generated by University operations.

The Environmental Compliance Manager also coordinates emergency response to hazardous materials spills and releases on campus, collaborating with local contractors, regulatory agencies, and local first responders.

Environmental Research Coordinator

Randall’s Island Park Alliance’s (“RIPA”) Park-as-Lab is a research initiative that transforms Randall’s Island Park into a living laboratory. PAL unites scientists, advocates, and communities to encourage civic engagement, support STEM career pathways, and deepen understanding of New York City’s ecosystems. The program is guided by the motto “science for the people, by the people,” and aims to build more resilient communities through applied, inclusive research.

The Environmental Research Coordinator facilitates the PAL program, transforming urban park data into actionable knowledge, from research design and data collection to the interpretation and application of findings. The Coordinator reports to the Director of Environmental Programs and works closely with departments across the organization, especially the Natural Areas, Urban Farm and Horticulture teams. Drawing on both natural and social sciences, the Coordinator leads efforts to design and implement research that deepens understanding of how parks function, who parks serve and how that knowledge can drive better outcomes for communities and ecosystems alike. The Environmental Research Coordinator also partners with academic institutions and community organizations to ensure that research is scientifically rigorous, inclusive, and applied in ways that benefit parks and the communities we serve.

We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Role Overview:

This position is in Office of Air Quality Permits Branch. The position requires project management and time management skills.
